Puffed rice upma is made by first rinsing puffed rice in lots of water to soften them. Then the excess moisture is gently squeezed up. Later a onion tomato masala is made to which the softened puffed.

  1. Prepare 2 cups (riceKurnai/Noyyi in Tamil) broken rice that is rice rava
  2. Prepare 5 cups Water
  3. Make ready 1/2 cup Tur dal
  4. Take 20-25 Black pepper
  5. Take 1 tbsp Jeera
  6. Get 4 Red chillies
  7. Take to taste Salt as per taste
  8. Prepare 1/4 cup Grated coconut

  11. Make ready Pinch each Mustard,urad dal(split),hing, curryleaves

But Personally I love serving with Vendhaya Kuzhambu. Arisi upma is made with raw rice and dal, we make it with toor dal (thuvaram paruppu) but I have seen people make with chana dal and moong dal too. Very easy and simple recipe and one pot meal if you. Arisi upma is our family favorite recipe.

Instructions to make Rice Upma:
  1. Take rice wash it and transfer it in a stainer so that excess water is drained. After 10 to 15 minutes when the rice becomes dry, grind rice coarsely like rava. If you can not grind at home, buy broken rice called as rice noyi or kurnai in tamil which we can get from grocery shop. It will be little big in size so have to break it into rava form (after leaving it for 5minutes upon sprinkling water on it).You can use normal rice and follow this procedure.
  2. Take Toor dal,pepper, jeera and grind it coarsely in a mixer jar and keep aside.
  3. Here I am using pressure coooker.Now heat oil in a cooker,add mustard seeds when it splutters add urad dal,hing,red chillies and curry leaves.Fry till dal changes to golden brown colour.
  4. Now add rice rava,coarsely grinded toor dal mixture.
  5. At low flame stir it.Now add grated coconut and mix it.Add 5 cups water and required salt.Add water using the same measuring cup used for rice rava.
  6. Now close the lid of cooker.Pressure cook on medium to low flame for about 3 whistles.
  7. After the pressure releases from cooker open it and mix well.
  8. Serve hot Rice Upma with coconut chutney.

I learnt this from my MIL. Puffed Rice Upma Recipe or uggani is an upma recipe made in South India mainly Andhra Pradesh. Puffed rice is commonly called as murmura in hindi and maramaraalu and borugulu in Andhra Pradesh. Rice Upma is a common breakfast in my house and also one of my favorite breakfast. It can be prepared in a jiffy, if you have rice rava ready.
