The daal that I grew up eating was either green lentils or simple red lentils (masoor daal) boiled with some turmeric and red chili powder. This mixed daal has more texture and flavor, thanks to the addition of tomatoes, ginger, garlic, and onion; and generous amount of. Instructions to make Moong Masoor Dal Masala:
- Clean, wash and soak both the dals in lukewarm water for 30 minutes. Boil in required amount of water, turmeric powder and 1/2 tsp cooking oil for 1 whistle. Let the cooker naturally cool down. - - Heat oil+ ghee in a wok. Add dry chilli and panch pbutan and allowed to splutter. Then mix chopped onion and fry till translucent. - - Then add ginger and garlic paste, chopped tomatoes and rest other dry masala and salt. Put 2 tsp water, cover and cook in low flame till the oil separate from masala.
- Mix well the cooked masala with boiled dal and let it simmer for 2 minutes. - - Now the hot dal is ready to serve. - Thanks - Note: Cook the masala in low heat. This enhance the taste and aroma of the dal/curry.
